Drawing Together Episode 45: Drawing a Lily
this episode is Part of the Drawing Together live video series – learn more here
We’re visiting flowers again, and I’m very excited. This time, I’ll be using graphite to capture the delicacy, light, and detail of a beautiful yellow lily. Follow along using this reference image: https://bit.ly/3iFvCZn
We want to see your drawings! Share your finished pieces and any tips with us below.
Today, I’m working with:
- Smooth drawing paper
- Ebony Pencil (4B, 6B, or darker graphite will work)
- Kneaded and Rubber Erasers
In this session, we’ll cover:
- Drawing flowers
- Drawing a lily
- Drawing techniques for texture
- Realistic shading techniques
My lily. Not the best thing I’ve ever drawn and I may do it again. But I’m happy with it at the same time
My lily. It looks better in real life.
This is my second attempt to draw. My first one was the peeled orange. I had a hard time to draw this lily more than the orange. Tried to draw with Ebony pencil but the shininess of the pencil on the paper bothered me, so I decided to use charcoal pencil instead.
Your honest opinion is appreciated.
Thanks.
Didn’t get to finish on the live show. I like how it turned so glad I went back and finished. Thanks leaving up the recordings
Lagging a little but finished the lily.
Thanks Jaci! I use a strathmore white charcoal paper here, and I also have another book of the same but varying toned paper. It seems to work really well but not sure if I should go with smoother paper for graphite. I confess I used an outline to begin the lily vs shadow shapes. I fall back on line rather often though I’ve tried not to. Lol.
Hi Jace; I’m hoping for a less “silvery” effect and greater contrasts; I’ll keep you posted!
Not my best work, but loved the process. Thank you for the inspiration and the insights!
The lily was by far the hardest for me, but I absolutely loved the work, the way the world seems to disappear while drawing.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, your technique, and your insights!
Here’s my lily. My stamens kinda travelled to a different area. I really enjoyed this one. I used only a 6B Staedtler Pencil
I used an bony pencil for mine and enjoyed working with it except I REALLY have to be careful about rolling it so much that I get a point I could use for a spear! HA! It was harder than I thought it would be but fun. I don’t like that I put my stamen all in a row, and the whites(highlights)were not a bright as I’d like. But…all in all…interesting.
One more thing…your paper almost looks like canvas. What are you using?
Love it! I am more of a shading kind of person…my husband LOVES lines. It’s been interesting to see the two of us attempt the same subject. I think you are doing a great job letting go of your lines…not that you ahve to all the time…just some! HA!
I think you did a good job! Several thanked Scott for doing something a bit easier this time but in reality, it really wasn’t. I like how you did your background!
Mary Jo, I bought an Ebony pencil too and used it this time for the lily. I can’t honestly say I see a LOT of difference in it and other pencils…just a different kind. If, after using it more you DO see a difference, will you come back on and say so so we all can learn?
WOW! It may have been difficult for you but you did an outstanding representation!
Another rather difficult subject, at least it was for me using graphite. Seemed like it gets too Shiny and slips over the paper without grabbing like charcoal. I just struggle with graphite.
This is my fourth session, I am having to discipline myself to use the side of the pencil, I’ve depended on “the line” for too long. You’ll see that I still fall back on old habits. Finding the edges without a line is taking some getting used to. I enjoy your teaching style, it feels comfortable, helpful and motivating, thank you. This is really the reverse of studio classes where the teacher is looking over the students’ shoulder rather we are all looking over yours, I like it.
I’m using a regular #2 pencil and struggling to get a clear definition with shading alone and feel like I need to use line drawing to keep it from just being messy. I ordered ebony pencils; hoping that will make a difference! Thanks for another great class, Scott!
This one was tough!
