Drawing Together Episode 40: Drawing a Smiling Woman
this episode is Part of the Drawing Together live video series – learn more here
Continuing on with some recent portrait drawings, for this episode, I’ll focus on drawing a woman’s smile. My trial version of this drawing proved to be much more challenging than I anticipated, so let’s see how this one goes!. Follow along using this reference image: https://bit.ly/2zFM3TK
We want to see your drawings! Share your finished pieces and any tips with us below.
Today, I’m working with:
- Hahnemuhle Sketch paper
- Charcoal (vine, compressed, and charcoal pencils)
- Kneaded and Rubber Erasers
In this session, we’ll cover:
- Drawing a smile
- Drawing lips and teeth
- Realistic shading techniques
Wonderful exercise! Loved drawing a smile. Thank you, Scott!
I did this one as the tutorial aired and didn’t finish. This was a tough one…don’t like her teeth, but I learned a lot.
This was fun; I know it doesn’t look just like the reference photo, but I tried very hard to capture her joyful expression!
I love how you did the eyes
Thanks for doing these videos.
Smile!
Always a tough subject. I think I avoided my usual “chiclets”. Thanks Scott
This is beautiful!
I was feeling good about this until the teeth… my gums got out of control and it started looking like a horror-show . This is why I’ve always avoided smiling portraits! ?
Welcome, Charmaine! This drawing is amazing!
Nice work here, Jaci!
Nicely done, Irene! I do see a bit of a sneer, but that’s OK. This is wonderful drawing!
Thank you for watching, Adele. This drawing looks great!
Ha! This turned out great!
That’s great to hear, Vickie! this looks great!
This looks great!
Very nice expression here, Cindy!
I liked her eyes.
Here’s my woman’s smile. Bit of a challenge with the teeth but I’m happy with how it turned out.
The teeth were a struggle, like the skull we did. I had to finish the face although it doesn’t look much like the reference image. I always enjoy drawing together!

Really enjoy the drawing sessions, Scott. It’s great practice and you
make the time fly by. Look forward to the next one.
I worked it past the ‘ugly duckling’ stage and continued well into the ‘horror movie’ look 🙂
It still looks creepy to me, LOL! I confess I worked on it much longer than the live session…
Thanks Scott for the fun classes. I haven’t drawn a thing since I was 16 at school and that was 40 years ago. I used the reference photo but don’t think you would know mine is from the same photo. Anyways was nice to have a go….. looking forward to the next lesson now 🙂
Interesting process to get to the teeth. Smile or sneer?
I was not unhappy with my smile until I put it on my easel and realized I have the left side down a lot more than it should be if I am being particular to the reference photo. But….
I am new to “Drawing Together” and like Scott, I paint and don’t draw enough….This was so much fun!!
