Drawing Together Episode 31: Walk This Way

this episode is Part of the Drawing Together live video series – learn more here

A walk in nature can be a great way to clear the mind when we feel overwhelmed and overloaded. That’s what this drawing is all about. Simplifying a scene that seems overwhelmingly packed with information. I don’t often use a straight-edge, but I’ll also show you my process for using one while maintaining life and energy in the drawing. Let’s get going! Follow along using this reference image: https://bit.ly/3645Loc

Today, I’m working with:

  • Hahnemuhle Sketch Paper
  • Vine Charcoal
  • Compressed Charcoal Pencil
  • Kneaded and Rubber Erasers
  • Ruler or other straight-edge, if you’d like

In this session, we’ll cover:

  • Drawing reeds and grasses
  • Realistic charcoal drawing techniques
  • Perspective Drawing
  • Managing Detail
  • Using a Straight Edge

  1. I think I left too little room between end of the path and the tree line. Feel like I need more reeds covering the end but they would be too big that close to the trees. Thanks so much for doing these videos.

  2. This is what I did in 1hour and 25 minutes.
I thought it would be intimidating as well but it was actually fun.
Thanks Scott for breaking down the drawing in a common sense way.
Reminds me of a special place in Florida.
I want to go there right now!
