this episode is Part of the Drawing Together live video series – learn more here
This suggestion came from you, viewers. Flowers aren’t something I’ve spent much time working with, so let’s take some time to explore drawing a rose. How do we draw a rose? We’ll find out! Work from your own rose, or follow along using this reference image: https://bit.ly/34ZR98B
Today, I’m working with:
- White drawing paper
- Charcoal Pencils
- Vine Charcoal
- Kneaded and Rubber Erasers
In this session, we’ll cover:
- How to draw a realistic rose in charcoal
- Shading techniques
- Creating texture
- Subtle value control
Here is the more finished drawing of the rose
This was just a very quick pencil sketch of the rose. I like the leaf shapes and negative spaces at the bottom. I may do a more finished drawing of the rose.
This is a great lesson for working on observation. Thank you

Thank you, Jaci! I use charcoal on charcoal paper, and I blend with brushes usually.

Very nice work!
Your work is amazing! I am a beginner, but your work gives me inspiration!
Roses are, for some reason, so hard. This went much better than I was anticipating.
You’re doing great!!
Are you using charcoal or graphite. Your work(all of it) looks so smooth. Very nice!
WOW! I love it. You did great!
This was one of the most difficult drawings for me. I kept getting lost.
